Abortion drug prevents tumors in mice, study says
Dec 1, 2006, 12:09
A sustained dose of RU-486, the so-called abortion pill, prevented breast cancer tumors in mice with a genetic mutation that made them highly susceptible to the disease, researchers at UC Irvine report today.
The mutation in a gene known as BRCA1 leads to uncontrolled cell growth in the mammary glands. About one in 800 women inherits a version of BRCA1 that is damaged in some way, and the National Cancer Institute estimates that up to 80% of such women will develop breast cancer.

Cool down – you may live longer
Nov 3, 2006, 23:11
The refrigerator is used to lengthen the life of your food, and a new study suggests a similar principle could prolong your life, too. Researchers have found that lowering the body temperature of mice by just 0.5°C extends their lifespan by around 15%. In the future, people might be able to take a drug to achieve a similar effect on body temperature and enjoy a longer life, they say.

Step up and reach out with CSBR
Dec 9, 2005, 18:44
The California Society for Biomedical Research (CSBR) Speakers' Bureau is an opportunity to bring the world of biomedical research into the classroom in Nevada and California. Each year, we routinely receive requests from science teachers for speakers to come into the classroom talk about careers in the life sciences and the benefits of biomedical research. For many students, this may be the only time that they come in contact with a research scientist or interface with anyone employed in the field of biomedical research.
School groups range from elementary school to advanced placement students in high school and number no more than 35 students at a time. The amount of time alloted for most speakers is no more than one hour and due to the number of speakers currently registered, you may only be asked to speak once. But once is all that is needed to transform a good science student into a budding scientist or researcher.
If you are interested in changing the lives of tomorrow's future scientists, then please contact Vernard Henley via e-mail vhenley@ca-biomed.org.

In a small, dimmed exam room at UC Davis' School of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, a snake squirms only slightly in the two sets of human hands holding her.
A high-frequency ultrasound wand with a layer of gel on the end glides around the surface of one of the California king snake's eyes.
She doesn't know it, but the 3-foot 7-inch snake born in 2002 is part of a milestone for UCD veterinarians, and for veterinary medicine as a whole.
