AALAS Member Bill Heckt Named Ron Orta Humanitarian Award Winner

The Ron Orta Humanitarian Award was presented to Bill L. Heckt on May 6th at the Mission Palms Hotel in Tempe, Arizona at the 2010 District 8 Conference for his work not only in the field of laboratory animal science, but for his community and volunteer work serving as an member and officer of the Lions International Club, judging science and engineering fairs, and volunteering as a ski instructor for a non-profit ski and snowboard program for children of low income families. The award was created after Ron’s death, November of 2007 of ARDS (acute respiratory disease and is meant to represent his compassion, dedication, friendship, and humility to persons in the lab animal community.

Transparent fish gives scientists clear view

Scientists have created a transparent fish that lets them see through its skin to watch the progression of disease in real time. The fish, a breed Zebrafish named Casper, has granted researchers further insight into how diseases, especially cancer, act in living organisms, not just in a test tube or a dissected animal.

Founding Board Member, Steve Wickler, Dies at 55

Dr. Steven J. Wickler, who served as a professor of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, passed away peacefully at home on May 26 from a brain tumor. He was 55.
"Wick touched so many people," said President Michael Ortiz. "His energy and spirit are the things that I will most remember about this extraordinary person. Betty and I are so saddened by his passing, but feel privileged to have become his friend. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nicole and his family during this very difficult time."

Founding Father, Bob Robinson, Dies at 81

Dr. Robert Robinson, DVM, one of the "Founding Fathers" of Palms to Pines Branch AALAS, passed away July 28, 2006, after a brief illness.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Margaret, his son, Doug and daughter-in-law, Erika, of Clements, CA, his son, Don and daughter-in-law, Carmen, of Lebanon, OR, his daughter, Joanne and son-in-law, Sean, of Huntington Beach, CA. He leaves behind six wonderful grandchildren, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
